Tracked vs. estimated report

Understand how accurately work was estimated by comparing planned hours with logged and remaining effort.

What is the Tracked vs. Estimated Report?

The report, called Planned vs. Tracked in Planyway, compares your original plan with the effort required to complete Jira work items.

It helps you identify tasks that are taking longer than expected and improve future estimation.

Open the report

  1. Go to Reports.

  2. Open Planned vs. Tracked.

  3. Select the relevant Jira spaces.

  4. Apply filters and choose the reporting period.

Understand report columns

Planned time

The total estimated effort for a work item.

Planned time includes the work item's own estimate and estimates from its allocated parts.

Tracked time

The total hours recorded through work log entries.

Remaining time

The effort still expected to complete the work item.

Deviation

The difference between actual effort and planned effort.

Deviation %

Actual effort as a percentage of the original plan.

How deviation is calculated

When remaining effort is included:

Actual time = Tracked time + Remaining time

Deviation = Actual time − Planned time

Deviation % = Actual time ÷ Planned time × 100

You can configure whether remaining time should be included in deviation calculations.

Example

Suppose a work item has:

  • Planned time: 20 hours

  • Tracked time: 18 hours

  • Remaining time: 8 hours

Actual projected effort is 26 hours.

Deviation = 26 − 20 = +6 hours

Deviation % = 26 ÷ 20 × 100 = 130%

This means the task is projected to require 30% more effort than originally planned.

Understand report indicators

  • Below 100% — Actual or projected effort is below the estimate.

  • 100% — Actual or projected effort matches the estimate.

  • Above 100% — The task is exceeding its planned effort.

Positive deviations appear in red to highlight potential overruns.
