What is workload distribution?
Workload distribution determines how a task's estimated effort is allocated over its scheduled duration.
Planyway supports two modes: Even and Filled.
Change distribution mode
Open Workload view.
Click Options.
Find Distribution.
Choose Even or Filled.
Your workload calculations update automatically when you switch modes.
Important: The distribution setting applies globally across all projects and users in Planyway.
Even distribution
Even mode distributes the task's estimated hours equally across its scheduled working days.
For example, if a task has an estimate of 16 hours and spans 4 working days, Planyway distributes 4 hours per day.
Even distribution is the default mode.
It's especially useful for Scrum teams that expect work to progress steadily throughout a sprint.
Filled distribution
Filled mode schedules estimated effort as early as possible, filling available working hours until the task is complete.
The calculation considers:
Other work items scheduled for the same period and their priorities.
Each person's working hours.
Weekends and non-working days.
Holidays and vacations.
For example, a 16-hour task may take two days when a person has 8 free hours on each day.
If they already have other work scheduled, the task's hours may be distributed across additional days.
Filled mode is useful for Kanban teams that plan to complete work as soon as capacity becomes available.
Which mode should you choose?
Use Even when:
Work is expected to progress steadily.
You're planning Scrum sprints.
You want a balanced distribution across a task's date range.
Use Filled when:
Work should be completed as early as possible.
You need to account for other scheduled work.
You're managing a flow-based or Kanban process.
You can switch between modes at any time without changing the task's original estimate.
