What are milestones?
Milestones mark important moments in your project, such as a product launch, stakeholder review, or completion of a major development phase.
Planyway supports two types of milestones:
General milestones — Mark important dates and deadlines across your project or portfolio. They appear as standalone milestones on the timeline and can be linked to Jira work item types.
Epic milestones — Track key stages and checkpoints within a specific epic. They appear directly inside the epic bar.
General milestones
General milestones help you highlight important dates that aren't necessarily tied to a specific epic.
For example, you can use them to mark:
Product launches
Project deadlines
Release dates
Stakeholder presentations
Major delivery checkpoints
Create a general milestone
Open the Gantt, Timeline, or Workload view.
Enable Milestones in the view settings.
Find the milestone lane on the timeline.
Click the date where you want to add a milestone.
Enter the milestone details and create it.
The milestone appears on the timeline, making the key date visible alongside your scheduled work.
Sync general milestones with Jira
You can map milestones to a Jira work item type in your space settings.
This allows you to represent milestones using Jira work items rather than managing them only within Planyway.
To configure milestone mapping, open Space settings and select the Jira work item type you want to use for milestones.
Epic milestones
Epic milestones help you break large initiatives into smaller, trackable stages.
Unlike general milestones, Epic milestones belong to a specific epic and appear directly inside its timeline bar.
They're especially useful for tracking internal checkpoints within long-running projects.
Create an Epic milestone
Open the Gantt, Timeline, or Workload view.
Right-click the epic where you want to add a milestone.
Select Create Milestone.
Enter a name and due date.
Click Create.
The milestone appears within the epic bar.
Manage Epic milestones
You can:
Assign milestones to team members.
Review planned, completed, and overdue milestones.
Customize milestone colors.
Add multiple milestones to the same epic.
Epic milestones and Jira synchronization
Epic milestones are managed within Planyway. They do not create Jira issues and do not change standard Jira reports but they can be reached through the Jira issue dialogue.
General vs. Epic milestones
| General milestones | Epic milestones |
Purpose | Highlight project-wide deadlines and important dates | Track progress and checkpoints within an epic |
Location | Standalone milestones on the timeline | Inside an epic bar |
Connected to an epic | Not required | Yes |
Jira synchronization | Can be mapped to a Jira work item type | Managed only in Planyway |
Which type should you use?
Use general milestones when you want to highlight major deadlines, launch dates, or other important events across your roadmap.
Use Epic milestones when you need to track specific phases or delivery checkpoints within an individual epic.
Tip: You can use both types together. For example, create a general milestone for a product launch and Epic milestones for design approval, development completion, and final testing.
